Designer's Notes:
This is another design created specifically for teaching. I wanted to introduce my students to the basics of lace knitting while creating an attractive sample piece. The stitch pattern is a variation on the traditional Feather and Fan motif. What I find most appealing about the pattern is the two distinct but complimentary ends.
In the pattern you will find both written instructions as well as a simple chart of the same. Although most beginning knitting students feel most comfortable with written instructions, the value of chart reading cannot be ignored. Birdie Lace Scarf is a great opportunity to learn the basics of chart reading; the pattern is so simple and predictable that learning how to read the charts couldn't be much easier. And finding and fixing mistakes is easy too.
Another exciting aspect of this pattern is its versatility. I used a sport weight yarn in the sample, it looks equally attractive in worsted weight or fingering. I haven't had the opportunity to knit it myself, I imagine that it would also look amazing in a single color mohair laceweight.
When I am learning a new skill, I don't like ending up with useless swatches. I want something lovely and wearable. For learning lace, this project would suit me just fine!
