Plodding Along

"Journeys" by James Jordan

This is a week of needing little inspiration and much drive to complete what already sits before me. I don't need new inspiration, I'm tantalized by seeing my work *almost* done. But that doesn't make for exciting blog posts. Instead of trying to create sort of artificial posts, I thought I'd share with you some thoughts, resources, and stuff that have been my companions as I design lately.

As I've been navigating my way through my first set-in sleeve design, books have been my crutch. They've been giving me the courage to figure the design out and the distraction I need when I'm completely overwhelmed and frustrated. "Designing Knitwear" by Deborah Newton hasn't helped me much technically, but her writing style and general overview of how to create the sleeve cap have really helped the process seem approachable.

I've also found the drawings in "Knitting from the Top" by Barbara Walker to be very helpful in conceptualizing the sleeve in 2 and 3 dimensions.

And finally, when I'm just too tired to deal with numbers any more I've been enjoying the delightful writing of Elizabeth Zimmerman in "The Opinionated Knitter". Brooklyn Tweed has been knitting many EZ designs and his lovely photos have made me want to really look and read her work carefully. I find it so interesting that EZ, queen of knitting innovation, did not like to purl. It makes more sense to me why so many of her designs don't appeal strongly to me. I really like purling and the effect it creates whereas I tend to avoid garter stitch. I think what I enjoy most of all about EZ is the way she writes. I wish I could have known her and enjoyed in person her rich and varied thoughts and experiences.
